Migrate from Ubuntu 20.04 LTS End of Life

Ubuntu 20.04 LTS is approaching end-of-life in April 2025, after this date new installations on Ubuntu 20.04 will be blocked but will continue allowing upgrades.

As of the 2.13.12 and 2.14.3 releases, official support for 24.04 is now available on all release branches. This is great timing for customers who need to move from Ubuntu 20.04, so we have provided a set of instructions here to assist you.

Do I need to take any actions?
Yes – You should upgrade your operating system before April 2025 or you may have difficulty in the future using Ubuntu 20.04 after EOL hits.

Can MediaCP Support do this for me?
Yes – We can complete a Migration Service to migrate your MediaCP to a new server running Ubuntu 24.04 (or another supported O/S).

Migrating to a Fresh Installation.

We recommend completing a fresh install of Ubuntu 24.04 on a different server and migrating over for the best stability and experience. Migrating will avoid issues that can arise when upgrading and will allow for a fallback if you encounter issues after the move. We have a comprehensive guide for migration available as well as offer Migration Services if you would like our team to complete this for you.

Can I Upgrade from Ubuntu 20.04?

If you would like to upgrade to Ubuntu 24.04 there are detailed instructions including a full guide available from CyberCiti. The base steps are to install ubuntu-release-upgrader-core and then follow the steps to upgrade ubuntu releases.

Before upgrading you should complete a full backup and store the backup at a different location to avoid data loss.

Can MediaCP Support Upgrade for me?
No – We will not upgrade your Ubuntu 20.04 installation for you, due to the risk of data failure and or data loss. We can complete a Migration Service to migrate your MediaCP for you instead.

Moving to Ubuntu LTS 24.04

With our latest releases 2.13.13 and 2.14.4 official support for Ubuntu LTS 24.04 has been added. For customers wanting to move to this version of Ubuntu we have a set of instructions here to assist you.

Please note support for Ubuntu 24.04 is currently only available on our latest releases versions 2.13.13 & 2.14.4 Upgrading to Ubuntu 24.04 if you are not running 2.13.13/2.14.4 will not work and will cause issues. Please ensure before moving to Ubuntu 24.04 that you are running 2.13.13+ or 2.14.4+.

No – We cannot perform operating system upgrades, however we complete a Migration Service to migrate your MediaCP to a new server running Ubuntu 24.04 (or another supported O/S).

Ubuntu Server LTS Supported

Popularity for Ubuntu has boomed in recent years and we are proud to announce official support for Ubuntu Server LTS.

Which versions are supported

We plan to include support for all LTS versions within Standard Support period close to their release date, which includes currently Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.

Ubuntu 22.04 LTS has only been released for less than a month and we plan to include support within our next minor update 2.11.6 which should be available within the next week.

What about Ubuntu Desktop versions?

Please note that while it theorhetically should be supported, we do not recommend using Ubuntu Desktop because it is designed for running a workstation as opposed to a server and may have differences that will affect performance and stability.
